Los Angeles's Mediterranean climate makes outdoor weddings possible year-round, though April through November offers the most reliable weather. Peak season runs May through October, when you can expect warm, dry conditions and minimal rain risk. Even during these ideal months, always secure a backup plan—many venues offer both outdoor ceremony spaces and covered reception areas, or can accommodate tent rentals for added security.
Consider your ceremony timing carefully: summer sunsets happen between 7:30 and 8:00 PM, perfect for golden-hour photos against the Pacific coastline or Griffith Park views. Spring and fall ceremonies can start earlier, around 5:00 PM, for comfortable temperatures. If you're planning a Malibu or Santa Monica beach wedding, factor in coastal fog that sometimes rolls in during May and June mornings. Downtown venues like The Oviatt offer rooftop settings with both sun and shade options throughout the day.
Late spring (May-June) and early fall (September-October) offer the most reliable weather for outdoor weddings, with comfortable temperatures and lower chances of extreme heat or storms. Summer remains popular despite heat concerns, while winter outdoor events work best in milder climates.
Every outdoor venue should have a weather backup plan, regardless of season. When touring venues, ask about:
- Indoor backup spaces included in your rental fee
- Tent options and associated costs (clear-top tents maintain the outdoor feel)
- Timeline for making the indoor/outdoor decision
- Whether backup arrangements affect your overall budget
Outdoor venues on Zola's marketplace have a median starting price of around $4,500, about 12% higher than indoor alternatives, but this often reflects the premium natural settings these locations provide. Many couples find the investment worthwhile when booking during peak weather months like May or September.
For Los Angeles wedding venues, booking 12 to 18 months in advance is strongly recommended, especially if you're planning a wedding during peak season. Spring and fall weekends fill up quickly across the city, from beachfront properties in Malibu to garden estates in Pasadena. Summer dates, particularly June through September, are also highly competitive.
If you're flexible with your date or considering a Friday or Sunday wedding, you may find availability with 8 to 12 months' notice. Winter months (January and February) tend to have more openings and can offer better rates. Based on Zola marketplace data, the median venue starting price in Los Angeles is around $5,800, with popular dates commanding premium rates. Couples planning intimate weekday celebrations sometimes secure venues with just 6 months' lead time, though options become more limited.
Los Angeles offers diverse wedding venue options across several distinctive neighborhoods. Malibu delivers stunning Pacific coastline views and beachfront ceremonies, perfect for couples seeking a coastal California vibe. Santa Monica provides oceanside elegance with easier access for guests staying in central LA.
Pasadena features historic estates and the celebrated Los Angeles Arboretum, offering lush gardens and classic architecture. West Hollywood brings urban sophistication with rooftop venues and contemporary event spaces ideal for modern celebrations. Silver Lake appeals to couples wanting a creative, artistic atmosphere in a more intimate neighborhood setting.
Griffith Park and surrounding areas provide dramatic hillside backdrops with sweeping city views. Each neighborhood offers different price points and aesthetics—coastal Malibu venues often command premium rates, while inland neighborhoods like Pasadena can provide more budget-friendly garden and estate options.
