How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

“Tai was my makeup artist for my wedding, and she was wonderful to work with - professional, on time, kind, and patient throughout the entire process. I was pleased with my final look and felt like a more glam version of myself, which was what I wanted. Five of us had our makeup done, and Tai took great care with each person, especially my sister who has very sensitive skin and my mom whose makeup preferences were more specific. We also loved the touch-up kits provided for each of us. Tai was open to feedback both during my bridal trial and on the wedding day itself (pictures of my trial attached - realized I didn't take a good plain make up shots on the day of). Since I don’t have much experience with makeup terminology, it took us a little longer to get to what I wanted for my eye makeup and lip color. Tai was very accommodating as we adjusted a few things together. Looking back, I think seeing some colors swatched directly on my skin earlier in the process could have helped, especially since as a non-expert, it felt like we were on different pages trying to communicate. However, that probably isn’t specific to Lovely Beauty and would’ve been the case with myself and any make up artist. In any case, Tai’s willingness to collaborate and make adjustments was appreciated. Additionally, the Lovely Beauty Team was responsive to my emails and easy to work with throughout the planning process, and I would absolutely recommend them to other brides.”

Regan was kind, timely, easy to work with, and made everyone’s makeup vision come to life. She nailed my makeup trial and made me feel so beautiful on my wedding day. My makeup stayed on all night, despite 80 degree weather and happy tears. I cannot recommend LE Glam Team enough!”

“Nicole and her team made us all feel amazing on my wedding day this fall. After my trial, I tweaked a few things about my hair and I truly felt so radiant on the day/whole night. As someone who doesn't usually wear a lot of makeup, I was nervous about feeling myself and Nicole really knocked it out of the park creating a look that didn't feel cakey or costumey but looked incredible. The team she brought was also amazing and everyone had such a great vibe while we were getting ready. I had to add a last minute guest to hair and makeup and Nicole was so easy to work with and flexible regarding the shift which really limited the week-off stress. Could not recommend more!”

That said, I wanted an stress-free wedding day, so I decided to shop around and I’m so glad I found Kelli. From the very beginning, Kelli was kind, professional, and immediately understood my concerns and hesitations. She never made me feel pressured and was very transparent about pricing, which was competitive and fair. I especially appreciated that she wasn’t pushy about collecting all the money upfront. I was able to put down a deposit and wait to pay the balance once I knew what my bridesmaids actually wanted (they were very indecisive!). I ended up changing the number of services multiple times, even past the deadline, and Kelli was incredibly accommodating and made everything work without any added stress. I’m an anxious person by nature and was worried I was being annoying with questions and changes, but Kelli was always reassuring. During my trial hair and makeup, she helped me feel confident and we created a solid, realistic game plan for the wedding day, which gave me so much peace of mind.
