I’m Stephen, a wedding DJ, MC, and lifelong musician based in Hillsborough, NC. I love sharing my gift of music to help couples celebrate their love with the people who matter most. From your ceremony entrance to a dance floor full of friends, I bring thoughtful preparation, confident hosting, and joyful energy to your celebration. My background includes a PhD in Music Composition from Duke University, and I bring that musical knowledge and creativity to every wedding.

You’ll work directly with me throughout the planning process and on your wedding day. I’ll listen to what matters to you, help you work through the details, and coordinate with your vendor team so you can enjoy the celebration. Your music is mixed live around your taste and your guests, with room to respond as the night unfolds.     Wedding may 16

    DJ Stephen Downing nailed our wedding day from beginning to end. He listened carefully to what we wanted and answered our questions quickly throughout the planning process. When the big day arrived, he read the room perfectly and switched up the music to keep everyone dancing. The dance floor was packed all night, and guests kept telling us how great the DJ was. If you're looking for someone who knows how to work a crowd and actually cares about making your day special, Stephen is your guy. We'd book him again in a heartbeat.

    Amazing wedding DJ

    We were thrilled with DJ Stephen Downing from start to finish. He communicated with us quickly and directly throughout the planning process, which made everything feel easy and stress-free.     Dance the Night Away!

    Do you want to have the best time at your own wedding? Hire Stephen immediately! He was organized, professional, and offered several options for music. He seamlessly played our special request songs during the ceremony. But Stephen’s skills really shone during the reception. Not only was he an exceptional emcee, he was the person who kept our dance floor full ALL NIGHT! He mixed songs so well, even though we already knew many of the songs it was like hearing them for the first time. All night no one could stop talking about how great the DJ was, including ourselves! Do yourself a favor and have DJ Stephen at your wedding, you won’t regret it! We might plan another party just to have him there!

    A Must Book DJ for your NC Wedding!

    We love Stephen! Music was so important to us to create those special moments of our wedding day so finding the right DJ that could MC the night was critical - Stephen did just that and more! So many of our family and friends shared with us that they loved the music lineup Stephen queued up for the night that kept the party alive all night long. Having wide variety of musical tastes ourselves and us wanting to cater to our family and friends favorites, Stephen had an ear to seamlessly blend all types of genres together moving from today’s pop/ country to our Latin favorites to classic rock, he had everyone engaged and on the dance floor. When my dad and I couldn’t decide on a song for our father-daughter dance, Stephen created for us the perfect mix of our favorite two songs. We put full trust in Stephen to select for us our exit song for the night and he nailed it.     A True Professional!

    We're so glad we entrusted Stephen with DJing our wedding! He was excellent at his job (obviously) but he also impressed us with all the small things - he was responsive and friendly, he came prepared with a very thorough preference document for us to share our tastes and requests, he had no issues setting up for both ceremony and dancing despite our wedding being in a less "traditional" venue, and he definitely knew how to read the room even with songs that he was less familiar with.

Yes. I carry liability insurance and can provide proof of coverage if your venue requires it.
You’ll work directly with me from our first conversation through your wedding day. I’ll listen to your ideas, help you work through decisions, and check in as your plans come together. At your wedding, I bring preparation, enthusiasm, and care for the details. I love sharing music to celebrate your love, help everyone feel welcome, and create a great time with your guests.
You’ll receive a planning form where you can share song choices, important names, special moments, and preferences. I’ll review your plans, offer suggestions, and help you think through the music and timing. Before your wedding, we’ll meet to walk through everything together. You don’t need to have every detail figured out before we start.
Yes. Ceremony coverage is available and includes sound, music, and microphones so your guests can hear the meaningful words and songs you’ve chosen. We’ll plan your musical selections and cues beforehand, including where each song should start. On the day, I’ll coordinate with whoever is directing the ceremony so you can focus on getting married.
As involved as you want. Share must-plays, do-not-plays, favorite artists, playlists, or just a general direction. You can choose specific songs for meaningful moments and leave the rest to me, or give me more detailed guidance. I’ll use your preferences to shape the music while keeping enough flexibility to respond to your guests.
I prepare individually for your wedding and mix live around your musical preferences and how your guests respond. I’ll connect songs, move between styles, and adjust the energy throughout the evening. We’ll discuss what sounds fun to you and any songs or activities you want to avoid. Your celebration won’t follow a fixed wedding playlist.
That’s your choice. I can welcome requests, consider them selectively, or decline them. Any requests I play will respect your preferences and do-not-play list and fit what’s happening in the room. Your guests can contribute without taking the music in a direction you don’t want.
There’s no travel fee for weddings in the Triangle or Triad, including Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point. Weddings outside these areas may include a travel fee, which I’ll include in your quote.
Send me your date, venue, and a little about your celebration. I’ll confirm availability and arrange a video call to talk through your plans. When you’re ready, a signed contract and $500 down payment secure your date. The remaining balance is due one week before your wedding. Payment plans are available, and I accept Venmo and Zelle.
No. Tips are never expected, though always appreciated.
Yes. I also DJ private parties, corporate events, and community celebrations as my schedule allows. Tell me about your event, and we can talk through the music, coverage, and setup you need.
