Nothing brings me more joy than photographing weddings, which I’ve had the great pleasure of doing for 15 years. I love being part of what happens when family and good friends gather to celebrate something this meaningful. I truly appreciate being trusted to be intimately immersed in their religions and cultures across generations – there's nothing like it. Two weddings that come to mind are a traditional Khmer Buddhist wedding in California and an Orthodox Jewish wedding in an historic synagogue on Manhattan's Lower East Side. It's my honor to document this day for future generations, something I deeply feel during the ceremony.

I began my career in New York City, specializing in fashion/beauty, documentary and celebrity photography. Working alongside top fashion/beauty brands and their design teams, I developed a deep understanding of lighting, styling, hair and makeup, and the art of working with models and regular people in front of a camera. I bring this knowledge and experience into every wedding, creating beguiling, timeless imagery for couples around the world.

City micro wedding
Stephen was an incredible photographer to work with for our micro wedding in Hoboken. He maintained great communication through the planning and day of, and asked thoughtful questions throughout the process to really get a sense of us as a couple. His genuine interest in our story and life led to a very comfortable dynamic on our wedding day (which was important for two people who never get their photos taken!). The day of, Stephen managed our time perfectly to get our couple photos done in various places around the city, and back in time for the wedding itself. He captured beautiful candid shots through the ceremony and evening, and highlighted each moment without us even noticing (an amazing feat). Stephen’s style feels tailored but casual - beautiful, honest photos of people captured in their best light. Stephen also converts all the photos into black and white when editing, so you have a lot of options available at the end.

Thrilled with photos

Amazing photographer!
My wife and I used Churchill Downes Studio for our wedding and the results were just amazing. Stephen Downes is an artist - he finds a way to get the most beautiful and compelling photos that appear so natural and unscripted. great job
We chose Churchill Downes Studio for my child's wedding and was happy with my decision. Stephen was genuinely curious about what mattered to us, asking thoughtful questions throughout our planning to understand our vision. On the day of the wedding, he initiated the idea and took the time to walk around our town with them to scout out special spots for photos. The images he captured are artistic and striking—they have a dramatic quality that feels so different from typical wedding photography. He sends a tremendous amount of photos from which the couple can chose.

A NY afternoon in October, well spent mind you.
I was very tickled with myself that out of everybody I interviewed I went with Stephen who is still somebody important in my life, years later. I know I didn’t want a female photographer, perhaps from working in Hollywood and not caring for their energy. Stephen was so warm and approachable, easy on the eyes (!) and such a hit with my friends and family. A little bit of a nerd in the technical department, which made for some wonderfully surprising candid shots. I think so much of what goes into somebody working for you in a very private, emotional setting, is their decency and Stephen just uses integrity. Still so happy with my pictures after all these years, the mix of black-and-white and color.
